Our History
In early 2019, long-time friends and CrossFit athletes Louise Goodman and Amanda Beaulieu set out on a mission that would impact the lives of many. Drawing from their own recovery journeys and fueled by a passion for fitness, they envisioned a supportive sober community for individuals recovering from addiction—a place where they could heal and thrive together through movement and connection.
They launched Unbroken Recovery, holding their first class in May 2019 at CrossFit Bytown. What began as a single Friday class quickly blossomed into a vibrant community. Members bonded over shared experiences, celebrated victories, and supported one another through challenges. The warmth and camaraderie turned workouts into celebrations of resilience and hope, fostering a sense of belonging.
Just as momentum built, the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, forcing a six-month pause on classes. It was a challenging time for all, but when the world began to reopen, Unbroken returned with renewed energy. The program soon expanded from one weekly class to five, introducing boxing classes, and reaching three different gyms in the Ottawa area.
As Unbroken flourished, so did its coaching staff. Members who found strength in the program became coaches, embodying the spirit of mentorship and peer leadership. Together, they introduced special events like yoga and outdoor hikes, further enriching the recovery experience and deepening connections within the community.
Unbroken also engaged and became actively involved in broader initiatives, participating in community events such as the Capital Pride Parade and WOW Fest, highlighting their commitment to advocacy and support beyond their own walls.
Now a registered non-profit and charity, Unbroken Recovery stands as a testament to the power of connection, dedication, and shared journeys. Our ever-growing community, alongside our dedicated Board and valued community partners, continues to inspire one another, united by the belief that together they can overcome any challenge. With excitement and gratitude, they look forward to the future, ready to empower even more individuals on their recovery journeys.
